Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has claimed that Reuters is “lying” as he dismissed the agency's report suggesting plans to threaten Ukraine by cutting its access to Starlink internet in order to gain leverage over ongoing negotiations involving natural resources.
The report, released on Saturday, cited three U.S. officials acquainted with the situation. According to Reuters, during a meeting this week in Kyiv between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and former Trump envoy Keith Kellogg, the Ukrainians were warned of an “imminent shutoff” of Musk’s Starlink satellite service unless they agreed to the rare earths deal with Washington.
Later that day, Musk took to his social media platform X to refute the claims, asserting that such plans do not exist and accusing Reuters of “lying.”
“This is false. Reuters is lying. They are second only to AP as legacy news liars,” the billionaire stated.
SpaceX has been providing the Ukrainian military with Starlink internet since the escalation of the conflict with Russia in 2022, supplying over 40,000 terminals throughout the conflict. These terminals have become essential for command and control within Kyiv’s military operations.
Musk’s technology has been utilized in direct combat situations, with satellite terminals often adapted for use with aerial and naval drones, offering a reliable control link that is difficult to disrupt.
Furthermore, SpaceX reportedly obtained a new Pentagon contract to enhance Ukraine's access to the Starlink satellite network late last year. A Bloomberg report indicated that as part of the agreement, 3,000 Starlink terminals in Ukraine were granted access to Starshield, a more secure and militarized iteration of the system.
