The girlfriend of Pavel Durov, the co-founder of Telegram, has alleged that the stress following the arrest of the Russian tech mogul led to her losing their unborn child.
Yulia Vavilova, a 24-year-old influencer, was briefly detained with Durov in France at the end of August and was later called in for questioning. In a Telegram post she shared on Sunday, she also mentioned experiencing online abuse.
Durov was taken into custody after arriving in Paris in late August, facing several charges, including failing to cooperate with authorities and running an online platform allegedly utilized by organized criminals. He was subsequently released on bail but was prohibited from leaving the country while his case continues.
“The doctor said the baby’s heart wasn’t beating anymore,” Vavilova wrote in her post. She reported learning about her pregnancy approximately a day after Durov’s arrest. Although she was initially detained with him, she stated she was released the same day.
The French police later summoned her for questioning, but she did not attend since her doctor advised her against it, according to Vavilova. She described enduring a three-to-four-hour-long questioning session a month later.
Vavilova indicated that she focused on her “physical and mental health” for the next month, despite the stress tied to Durov’s arrest. According to broadcaster TF1, the 39-year-old billionaire faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison. She also mentioned experiencing a surge of online negativity.
“Bloggers blamed me for Pavel’s arrest, spreading conspiracy theories. The stress was indescribable. A panic attack kicked in. Everything came at once: Pavel’s arrest, lies and hate directed towards me,” she said.
“It would have been easy to give up or go insane, but we embraced this new reality amidst the uncertainty,” she added.
In early October, her doctor informed her that she had lost the baby. “It’s hard to describe the pain. We got so used to the idea by then. It was the 10th week,” Vavilova commented, noting that even though she and Durov “managed to cope with so much at once,” it proved to be “too much for the little one.”
Durov confirmed the news on his Telegram channel, stating that he learned of his girlfriend’s pregnancy through his lawyer during a police questioning. “I learnt that while I was away, the pressure on Julia had been insane,” the billionaire wrote. “Julia stood strong. But, unlike me, she wasn’t used to hostility.”
He had previously criticized the French authorities for what he described as a “misguided approach.” “No innovator will ever build new tools if they know they can be personally held responsible for potential abuse of those tools,” he said in early September after being released on a €5 million bail.
Durov had not publicly acknowledged Vavilova as his girlfriend before this incident. The Telegram founder, who holds passports from Russia, France, the UAE, and St. Kitts and Nevis, claims to have fathered over 100 children through sperm donation.
