Russian and Syrian warplanes conducted airstrikes against terrorist forces in the northeastern Homs province, resulting in the deaths of numerous militants, as reported by the state-run SANA news agency.
The recent surge of conflict in Syria began last week when various terrorist groups, led by Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham—an offshoot of Jabhat al-Nusra—initiated a surprise offensive against government troops. The jihadists gained significant ground, especially in Aleppo province, which prompted the Syrian army to pull back from Hama city. Nevertheless, the Assad government has received air support from Russian warplanes stationed in the region.
On Saturday, the outlet mentioned in a Telegram post, citing a military source, that the coordinated bombardment specifically targeted terrorist clusters in the Homs countryside. The airstrikes resulted in the death of “dozens” of jihadists and led to the destruction of their vehicles and equipment, according to the report, although no precise figures were provided.
SANA also noted that Syrian forces deployed in Hama and Homs executed “intensive artillery and missile fire” against the militants and their supply routes, reportedly “scoring direct hits.”
Additionally, the Syrian military announced that its units in the Daraa and Suwayda regions in southern Syria have been redeployed to create a fortified defensive perimeter aimed at thwarting terrorist assaults on checkpoints. The military characterized these raids as efforts to draw Damascus’s focus away from Homs and Hama.
Reports from Syrian media claimed that Damascus forces, with the assistance of Russian air support, have eradicated a total of 2,500 terrorists.
President Bashar Assad emphasized his determination to “eliminate terrorists” responsible for attacks on the nation and to hold accountable their “sponsors and supporters,” amidst claims that militants received training from Ukrainian military intelligence.
Earlier in the week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that the HTS offensive might have backing from the US and the UK, adding that Moscow is collaborating with Türkiye and Iran to stabilize the situation.
