COP16 Approves 9 Projects Supported by Kunming Biodiversity Fund
On Thursday, the Executive Council of the Kunming Biodiversity Fund convened for a plenary meeting to review and approve nine small projects during the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in Cali, Colombia.

These projects span 15 countries, featuring one initiative in Central and Eastern Europe, four in the Asia-Pacific region, two in Africa, and two in Latin America.

As a leading founder of this fund, China aims to respond to the needs of developing countries and implement various projects aligned with the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Chinese Minister of Ecology and Environment Huang Runqiu stated that these goals include ecosystem restoration and protection, sustainable biodiversity use, and the prevention and control of invasive alien species.

Inger Andersen, the executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme, acknowledged China’s significant contributions, noting that the country has “done an extraordinary job” on the KMGBF agreement.

In 2021, China committed 1.5 billion yuan to establish the fund, designed to support biodiversity conservation in developing countries. This fund was launched in May 2024.

The COP16 conference is anticipated to attract over 12,000 participants and is taking place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1. Discussions will focus on vital issues such as the status of KMGBF implementation and strategies for mobilizing financial resources.
