At a recent press conference, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security disclosed that it has granted 16,000 permits for the testing of autonomous vehicles. Additionally, it was announced that there are now 32,000 kilometers of designated roadways across the country available for testing these vehicles.

Wang Qiang, a high-ranking ministry official, expressed that these efforts are significantly propelling the development of autonomous driving technologies within the nation. "These initiatives have provided strong support for the advancement of autonomous driving technology in China," he stated.

Further collaborations have been established between the Ministry of Public Security and other departments such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Ministry of Transport to bolster the autonomous driving sector.

Efforts have been made over time to create and amend regulatory frameworks and laws to oversee the road testing, registration, and accountability concerning traffic safety for autonomous vehicles.

Wang emphasized the ongoing commitment to foster growth in this area and to enhance the broader automotive sector in China. "The ministry will continue working to promote the autonomous driving industry and upgrade the automotive industry in China," he noted.

The briefing also shed light on reforms by traffic management bodies aimed at improving the efficiency of services related to the licensing process, response to traffic incidents, and other traffic management functions.

The ministry shared additional statistics, noting that up to this point, 250 million digital driver's licenses have been issued nationwide. In line with digital advancements, a trial for digital vehicle licenses is currently underway in 60 cities, including Beijing, benefiting over 22 million vehicle owners with these digital documents.
