China collaborates with Pacific Island countries to enhance disaster management efforts
As the frequency of natural disasters increases globally, collaboration between China and the Pacific Island countries (PICs) in disaster risk reduction has significantly advanced.

In February 2023, China and the PICs inaugurated the Center for Disaster Risk Reduction Cooperation in Jiangmen City, located in Guangdong Province, southern China. This center represents the first multilateral cooperation platform focused specifically on disaster prevention and mitigation between China and the PICs.

The center's primary objective is to offer the PICs services including disaster risk monitoring, early warning technology, and support for post-disaster emergency materials and rescue operations. Since its inception, the center has made considerable strides toward achieving these aims.

"We have conducted training for the PICs, with about 40 officials from disaster management departments across nine countries participating in the program," said Wang Chunyang, executive dean of the Pacific Island Countries Research Institute, in an interview with CN.

"We also researched the types of natural disasters and disaster prevention and mitigation efforts in the PICs," she continued.

The PICs predominantly lie along a volcanic and seismic belt, making them prone to typhoons, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Natural disasters in this region can persist for extended periods, sometimes lasting over 100 days. Researchers at the center have developed strategic plans addressing both pre-disaster preparedness and post-disaster response.

"We use meteorological satellites and other related technologies to provide early warnings before a disaster," explained Huang Hui, a researcher at the Pacific Island Countries Research Institute.

"After a disaster, we focus on coordinating and managing supplies and logistics through big data technology and establishing emergency stations in affected areas," Huang added.

Through this collaborative effort, the center aims to tackle natural disasters, mitigate associated risks, and address various challenges. Their work seeks to protect people's properties and contribute valuable insights for international disaster prevention and humanitarian initiatives.
