China Announces Top 10 Scientific and Technological Achievements of 2024
On Wednesday, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) revealed the top 10 sci-tech achievements of 2024. This year's list features impressive innovations, including a lunar exploration mission, a brain-inspired chip, and a super microscope.

During a press conference in Nanjing, which is the capital of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, CAS Vice President Wu Zhaohui introduced the top achievements. The selections are made by academicians from both institutions, who are recognized as the highest authorities in the nation's science and engineering fields.

Among the highlighted achievements for 2024 is the Chang'e-6 lunar mission, which successfully collected samples from the far side of the moon. Additionally, the list showcases the world's first brain-inspired complementary visual chip based on primal language, alongside the first domestically-produced ocean drilling vessel named Mengxiang, or "Dream" in English, which was officially commissioned last year.

Other notable entries in the list include the world's first petabyte-level ultra-high-capacity optical disc storage device, and the Einstein Probe astronomical satellite, also known as the Tianguan satellite. This satellite was successfully launched and has reported a number of significant outcomes. Further innovations highlight a new technology for helium-free ultra-low-temperature refrigeration, as well as the development of the first universal CAR-T therapy utilizing donor-derived CAR-T cells to treat rheumatic and autoimmune diseases.

The 2024 list also features a super microscope capable of providing a panoramic view of large-scale cell interactions, the first successful observation of graviton modes in condensed matter worldwide, and the second Qinghai-Xizang Plateau scientific research expedition, which drilled the longest mountain glacier core globally and made several breakthroughs.

This announcement marks the 31st annual compilation of top sci-tech achievements, which has received substantial attention from media outlets domestically and internationally. It aims to enhance public understanding of advances in science and technology. The 2024 list of the world's top 10 sci-tech achievements was released during the same press conference in Nanjing.
