Earlier, Taipei labeled Beijing's actions as a “provocation,” noting the detection of 32 military aircraft and an unspecified number of warships off its coast, where they reportedly engaged in drills over an area spanning approximately 40 nautical miles.
The Defense Ministry in Taipei indicated that the exercises were conducted “without prior warning” and stated that local forces were dispatched to monitor the situation.
When questioned during a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian remarked that the issue was “not a question on foreign affairs,” but confirmed the initiation of the exercises. The Chinese Defense Ministry has yet to provide any comments regarding the situation.
Taipei has expressed concerns that the drills initiated by Beijing “caused a high degree of danger to the safety of international flights and vessels at sea.”
China has not disclosed detailed information about the exercises. Instead, Lin criticized the United States for its ongoing arms shipments to Taiwan, asserting that such actions violate the One-China principle and pose a risk to regional security.
“We urge the US to stop arming Taiwan and stop undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. China will closely monitor developments and firmly defend national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” the spokesman stated.
Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory under the One-China principle and insists on eventual unification, including the possible use of force if deemed necessary.
Since 1949, when nationalist forces retreated to the island following their defeat in China’s civil war, Taiwan has maintained self-governance.
Tensions between Beijing and Washington regarding Taiwan intensified earlier this month when the US State Department removed a statement about not supporting Taiwan's independence from its website’s “fact sheet.” In response, China urged the US to “correct its mistakes,” emphasizing that such actions send “a seriously wrong message to Taiwan independence separatist forces.”
