CEO Killed in New York City, Police Say
UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in Manhattan on Wednesday morning, as reported by the New York Police Department. The 50-year-old executive was rushed to a nearby hospital where he ultimately died from his injuries.

UnitedHealthcare, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, is among the largest health insurance providers in the United States. Thompson was set to address attendees at their investor conference at the Hilton Midtown in New York City.

The incident occurred at 6:46 AM when Thompson approached the venue. A masked assailant, who had been “milling around” near the hotel, produced a firearm and opened fire, according to police sources.

Thompson was hit multiple times in the chest and transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but he did not survive. The NYPD believes this was a “targeted attack,” as reported by Bloomberg and local station WPIX-TV.

Witnesses recounted to the New York Post that the shooter had been loitering near the hotel, seemingly waiting for Thompson. He was identified as a white male dressed in a cream-colored jacket, with a black face mask and a gray backpack.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled on foot through an alley before escaping on a bicycle, according to eyewitness accounts.

Investigators are currently seeking CCTV footage to aid in identifying the perpetrator, as noted by the New York Daily News. The NYPD suspects the assailant had been lying in wait for Thompson and is considering the possibility that the incident was a contract killing.

Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021.

The investor conference, which began at 8 AM, was abruptly halted about an hour later when a spokesperson informed attendees that the company was “dealing with a very serious… situation.”
