The charges were brought forth by a New York grand jury on Monday, as announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg during a press conference.
Currently in Pennsylvania, Mangione is awaiting extradition to New York, according to Bragg's statements from last week.
Should he be convicted, the 26-year-old faces a potential sentence of 20 years to life for the first-degree murder charge, and 15 years to life for each of the two second-degree murder charges. First-degree murder charges in New York are notably rare, typically reserved for cases involving law enforcement, judges, emergency responders, or instances of contract killing or terrorism.
Bragg indicated that one of the second-degree murder charges was specifically categorized as “an act of terrorism.”
Thompson was shot and killed outside a Hilton hotel in Manhattan on December 4 by an assailant wearing a mask and hood. Mangione was arrested five days later in Pennsylvania, found in possession of a firearm and silencer matching those used in the murder, alongside a handwritten manifesto, counterfeit identification, and a face mask.
“Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming,” Mangione wrote in his manifesto, further noting that “the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy.”
“It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play,” he continued, concluding with, “Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty."
Mangione has garnered a following among some on the American left, with an Emerson College poll revealing that 41% of 18-29-year-olds deemed his alleged actions “acceptable.” In a related incident, Florida police arrested a woman last week for making a death threat against the Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance company, apparently inspired by Mangione’s case.
