Border issues and soaring inflation: US House speaker outlines challenges in Biden's presidency
US House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration, claiming it will be characterized by "many failures" in a post on X on Wednesday.

He specifically pointed to Biden “engineering the worst border crisis in US history, bringing terrorists and violent illegals into our communities.” Data from US Customs and Border Protection indicated that the peak of illegal crossings from Mexico reached over 300,000 in the winter of 2022, with numbers dropping to around 100,000 since that time.

Johnson also highlighted Biden's role in “fueling skyrocketing inflation,” which hit a high of 9.1% in June 2022. He further accused the president of “weaponizing the [Department of Justice] to target political opponents,” a reference to ongoing legal challenges against President-elect Donald Trump.

The speaker noted that among Biden’s other errors was “pardoning his son despite saying he never would, and giving murderers and rapists clemency.” Hunter Biden had faced convictions related to his purchase of a firearm and was also charged with felony and misdemeanor tax offenses, but was pardoned by his father in December, with Biden citing “selective and unfair” prosecution due to familial ties.

Johnson added that the president was “hiding from the American people his mental decline.” Biden withdrew from the presidential race in July and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor after facing pressure to step aside following a lackluster first debate performance against Trump.

Johnson’s remarks also encompassed two foreign policy missteps, naming “orchestrating the disastrous withdrawal [of US forces] from Afghanistan” in 2021 and “emboldening enemies through a policy of appeasement.”

In a speech earlier this week, Biden defended his administration's record, asserting that “the US is winning the worldwide competition compared to four years ago” and claiming that “America is stronger. Our alliances are stronger.” He suggested that the growing unity among nations such as Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea during his term reflects their weaknesses, rather than those of the US.
