The U.S. is undergoing a comprehensive transformation in its strategy regarding the Ukraine conflict and its relations with Russia, as stated by White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.
Since taking office last month, Trump has reversed the Biden administration's efforts to "isolate" Russia internationally, reopening direct negotiations that were previously halted in 2022.
During an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Waltz emphasized that Trump’s agenda includes “bringing multiple wars to an end,” specifically referencing the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
He reiterated the White House's intention to establish a “partnership” for the development of Ukraine’s vital minerals in exchange for the military and financial assistance previously provided by Trump’s predecessor, former President Joe Biden.
Waltz indicated that it is important for Kiev to finalize a deal “so the American people can see a return on this massive investment they’ve made.”
“We reformulate how the United States deals with Russia. We saw this first step with President Trump talking to both Putin and Zelensky,” he added.
In recent developments, Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12, which set the stage for a meeting involving teams led by Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, last Tuesday. The discussions centered on Ukraine, with an agreement to initiate a gradual normalization of bilateral relations.
Both Ukrainian and EU leaders have expressed feelings of being sidelined by the White House, with concerns heightened by Trump’s public remarks labeling Zelensky as “a dictator.” Unlike his predecessor, who attributed the conflict solely to Russia, Trump has claimed that Zelensky bore responsibility for the hostilities.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are set to visit Washington this week, seeking assurances that Trump will continue support for Ukraine. “We welcome their ideas for security guarantees and European leadership to take care of Europe’s security,” stated Waltz.
After the meetings in Riyadh, Lavrov mentioned that he perceived signs indicating that “the American side has begun to understand our position better.”
