Donald Trump conveyed his aspirations for his legacy during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, celebrating his first month in office. He emphasized his determination to end military conflicts, particularly the crisis in Ukraine, reiterating that he possesses “the power to end this war” in order “to save lives.”
“It’s my hope that my greatest legacy will be as a peacemaker, not a conqueror, I don’t want to be a conqueror,” Trump stated to the assembled crowd.
This statement resonated with sentiments from his inaugural speech, where he aimed to be remembered as a “peacemaker and unifier,” stressing that a nation's strength should be evaluated by the wars it resolves or avoids rather than those it wins.
His comments appeared to reference his predecessor, Joe Biden, who significantly invested in arming Ukraine and increased weapons supplies during the latter weeks of his administration.
Trump has consistently assigned blame to Biden for the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, arguing that the war would not have started had he been in office. He pointed to his predecessor's comments regarding Ukraine’s potential NATO membership as a critical provocation that contributed directly to the current crisis.
During his CPAC address, Trump added that he believed “we are pretty close” to a deal on Ukraine, as US-Russia dialogue intensifies around peace efforts.
In related news, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt mentioned that the Trump administration is committed to continuing discussions with both parties and is hopeful for a peace agreement “this week.”
This development follows high-level discussions between US and Russian diplomats in Saudi Arabia last week. That meeting represented the first direct effort by the two nations to normalize relations after almost three years of tension under the Biden administration, concentrating on restoring bilateral ties and addressing the Ukraine situation. Notably, the negotiations excluded representatives from Ukraine and the EU.
Both Moscow and Washington have praised the Riyadh talks, initiated by the Russian and US presidents, as highly productive.
