"Open-source a hot topic" as Global Developers Conference commences in China
DeepSeek's accomplishments have placed open-source software development in the spotlight at the Global Developers Conference, which commenced in Shanghai on Saturday.

A report shared by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology during the conference indicated that China now holds the position of the second-largest nation globally in terms of the number of open-source contributors.

In addition to this, the rising number of high-quality open-source large models, projects, and communities is fueling the robust growth of the artificial intelligence sector.

Data from MIIT as of 2024 reveals that the number of software developers in China has surpassed 9.4 million. Furthermore, a report from the Cloud Computing Standards and Open Source Promotion Committee under the China Communications Standards Association highlights that Chinese projects now represent 17 percent of the global open-source software landscape, placing China second internationally.

During a keynote address, Harry Shum, former executive vice president of Microsoft's Artificial Intelligence and Research group, noted that with the open-sourcing of significant Chinese models like DeepSeek, China has shifted from being merely a beneficiary to a prominent contributor in the global open-source community. Shum, who is now the chairman of the council at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, expressed his optimism that more Chinese teams will take the lead in driving the future of open-source innovation.

This year marks the second edition of the GDC, designed to facilitate connections among participants by allowing projects to obtain funding, enabling scenarios to access services, helping businesses identify markets, allowing talent to join teams, encouraging developers to explore technologies, and assisting young individuals in finding partners. The event aims to promote resource alignment and industry integration among developers, further enhancing China's position in the global technology arena.
