Outgoing US President Joe Biden has approved a new $500 million weapons package for Ukraine as his administration aims to utilize all funds allocated by Congress before he leaves office in January.
This package, which is the 72nd of its kind, encompasses additional air defense, artillery, drones, and armored vehicles, as noted by White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby during a regular press briefing on Thursday.
The Pentagon has estimated that the weapons being dispatched under the Presidential Drawdown Authority are valued at $500 million. This shipment includes HIMARS rocket launchers, artillery munitions, anti-radar missiles, various military vehicles, and other equipment, according to the statement.
Last week, the US announced a separate security package worth $988 million authorized through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, another military aid mechanism.
The Biden administration has committed to exhaust all funding related to Ukraine, particularly after Donald Trump’s victory in the early November presidential election. Trump has indicated his intention to end the Ukraine conflict, which could result in reduced aid to Kyiv as a means of exerting pressure.
The outgoing US government has also permitted Ukrainian strikes using donated long-range missiles within Russian territory, encroaching upon what Moscow deems a red line. This action has been viewed by US officials as putting American and NATO interests in direct conflict with Russia, rather than simply engaging in a proxy war.
“I disagree very vehemently with sending missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. Why are we doing that?” Trump stated this week in an interview with Time magazine, which honored him as its person of the year for 2024. “I think that is a major escalation. I think it is a foolish decision,” added the president-elect.
Russia has asserted that no level of Western support can change the conflict's trajectory. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has suggested that Biden is striving to leave behind “a difficult legacy” marked by heightened tensions with Russia.
