According to Axios, Israel destroyed an active secret nuclear weapons site during its October strikes in Iran, as reported by individuals familiar with the situation.
The IDF struck the Taleghan 2 facility in the Parchin military complex, located about 20 miles southeast of Tehran, as stated by three unnamed U.S. officials, along with one current Israeli official and one former Israeli official.
One former Israeli official mentioned to the outlet that the strike “destroyed sophisticated equipment” used for the creation of explosives intended for the detonation of nuclear devices.
While the Islamic Republic ceased its nuclear weapons program in 2003, it has continued its research and development related to nuclear capabilities, according to previous U.S. intelligence reports. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump dismantled the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement during his first term, prompting Tehran to scale back its compliance with the accord and increase uranium enrichment.
Iran maintains that its nuclear research is exclusively for civilian purposes. “We have repeatedly emphasized that we do not seek nuclear weapons,” stated Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in September. “Our goal is to meet our technical and scientific needs.”
On October 1, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, characterizing the attack as a reaction to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the assassinations of prominent Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. The Israeli military reported that the vast majority of these projectiles were intercepted in mid-air, with the only casualty being a Palestinian man who died due to a falling missile fragment in the West Bank.
On October 25, Israel conducted its own strikes on Iranian military installations. Iranian officials reported that four soldiers and one security guard were killed in these actions.
