Baerbock emphasized the necessity for Europe to exert pressure on the United States if it does not align with the principles of “liberal democracies.” Her comments came after US and Russian officials held discussions that did not include representatives from the EU or Ukraine.
At a campaign rally in Potsdam on Friday, the Green politician remarked, “We’re increasing pressure on the Americans [so they know] they have a lot to lose if they don’t stand on the side of Europe’s liberal democracies.”
When discussing EU-US relations, Baerbock urged caution against making hasty interpretations, emphasizing that “nothing has been decided there.”
She stated, “No one can decide about war and peace for the Ukrainians or us Europeans, and this is the clear German stance.” Additionally, she cautioned against compelling Kiev into a “phony peace” or “capitulation,” asserting that such moves would only lead to more “war and violence.”
The discord between Washington and Brussels has intensified since Trump took office last month. Trump has adopted a more aggressive approach toward trade with the EU, threatening tariffs and calling for European NATO allies to increase their defense spending.
During the Munich Security Conference, US Vice President J.D. Vance delivered a stark message to European leaders, indicating that the continent faces a significant threat from within due to the decline of democracy.
“In Britain and across Europe, free speech, I fear, is in retreat,” he stated, concluding, “if you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you.”
Vance's speech elicited strong reactions from various governments, prompting leaders like Germany’s Olaf Scholz to counter his claims.
The tensions were further underscored by a recent meeting between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, which occurred without EU representation, causing disappointment and outrage across Europe.
In a recent Fox News interview, Trump criticized Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, labeling him a dictator without elections. However, several European leaders have dismissed Trump's claim about Zelensky's legitimacy.
Trump also expressed skepticism about the necessity of including Zelensky in peace negotiations with Russia, stating that French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer “haven’t done anything” to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine for the past three years.
