Recently, the administration of US President Donald Trump indicated that there could be an easing of sanctions if an agreement is reached between Moscow and Kiev, which raises the possibility of Western companies re-entering the Russian market after they left due to sanctions.
Putin noted, “Sanctions, despite all their challenges and difficulties, have played an important, stimulating role.” He elaborated that these restrictions have fostered deeper collaboration between domestic businesses and science, with “Russian companies are now increasingly turning to [domestic] scientists and getting solutions they need. And domestic solutions often turn out to be more effective than foreign alternatives.”
First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov mentioned on Thursday that only those companies deemed beneficial to Russia will be allowed to return. He added that while the EU and US focused on developing sanctions packages, Russia adapted its public procurement system, business support measures, and adjusted to the new landscape.
Manturov also noted that domestic manufacturers and companies from the Eurasian Economic Union—Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia—are now given “absolute priority” in Russia’s pursuit of technological sovereignty.
During the Future Technologies Forum, Putin instructed the government to create a framework for regulating interactions between Russian enterprises and foreign competitors. The goal of this regulation is to provide an edge for domestic manufacturers, with Putin stressing the importance of careful execution to maintain favorable conditions for local producers.
He remarked that “in the field of industrial production, we must think everything through... so as not to lose the potential that has been created by our adversaries who imposed sanctions against us.”
Putin has previously expressed similar views, suggesting that the sanctions have pushed Russia towards increased economic and financial independence, referring to them as a “blessing in disguise.”
