Harris Expresses Deep Disturbance Over Potential Assassination Attempt: "I condemn political violence"
The vice president expressed her gratitude regarding the safety of former President Trump, stating she is “thankful that former President Trump is safe.”
“As we gather the facts, I will be clear: I condemn political violence. We all must do our part to ensure that this incident does not lead to more violence,” Harris stated, through a press release from the vice president’s office.
The context for Harris' remarks came just hours after it was reported by local officials that Secret Service agents, tasked with protecting Trump, engaged an individual armed with an AK-style rifle outfitted with a scope close to the boundary of the golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump was present. The matter is being treated by federal authorities as an attempted assassination—marking the second such attempt on Trump in a recent two-month span.
“I am thankful that former President Trump is safe. I commend the U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement partners for their vigilance. As President Biden said, our Administration will ensure the Secret Service has every resource, capability, and protective measure necessary to carry out its critical mission,” commented Harris.
Both Vice President Harris and President Joe Biden were informed about the developments at Trump International Golf Course on that day. President Biden remarked in his own statement that a suspect had been detained.
“I am relieved that the former President is unharmed. There is an active investigation into this incident as law enforcement gathers more details about what happened. As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety,” Biden noted.
