Axios Labels Biden ‘a liability’ for Harris

President Biden had set aside several days to campaign alongside Harris, but her team did not arrange any joint events, the report reveals.
In response to Biden’s outreach, the Harris campaign has conveyed messages suggesting, “we’ll get back to you,” according to the sources shared with Axios.
The arms-length relationship appears to originate from Harris’ view that the 81-year-old president could be a “political liability at a crucial time in the campaign.” However, her team seems hesitant to express this sentiment directly or publicly reject Biden's involvement.
A source described the dynamic between Biden and Harris as resembling a “slow-moving break-up.”
“Harris’ team and allies respect Biden’s service, but are wary of further tying Harris to the unpopular president on the campaign trail,” noted Axios. One source remarked, “He’s a reminder of the last four years, not the new way forward.”
Earlier this summer, Biden withdrew from the presidential race following a heavily criticized debate performance against Republican contender Donald Trump in June. His approval rating has since plummeted to 39%, according to a Gallup poll from early October.
Meanwhile, last week, Biden’s offhand remark incited backlash from the Trump campaign, after he suggested that Trump should be incarcerated. “I know this sounds bizarre. If I had said this five years ago, you’d lock me up, but we’ve got to lock him up,” he said, accusing the former president of attempting to use his power to “physically eliminate someone he believes is a threat to him.”
Following this, Biden clarified that he meant to suggest "politically lock up" Trump, but his comments still faced criticism from Trump and other Republican figures, who have accused the Biden administration of weaponizing the Justice Department against rivals. Earlier this year, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on 34 counts related to hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and the events surrounding the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots.
Biden’s remarks also reportedly “frustrated” some of Harris' aides, Axios noted.
Despite the current situation, many within Biden's team still believe that the aging president can aid Harris in achieving victory, arguing that his appeal among certain voter demographics is often underestimated.
