Assad vows to 'eliminate' terrorists and their sponsors in Syria
The Syrian leader has pledged that his forces will continue to defend the territorial integrity of the country.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has vowed to “eliminate terrorists” who launched an offensive in the north of the country last week, along with their “sponsors and supporters.”

During a phone conversation with Badra Gunba, the acting president of Abkhazia, on Sunday, Assad emphasized that his forces would “continue to defend the stability and territorial integrity” of the nation. He stated, “Terrorism only understands the language of force, and that is the language which we will break and eliminate it with, along with whoever its supporters and sponsors are.” Assad added that his military forces “are capable of striking at the terrorists and those who support them” with the assistance of the country’s allies.

The Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham terrorist group, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, and its allied militias launched an attack on government-controlled areas in northern Syria last Wednesday. This offensive primarily focused on Aleppo and Idlib provinces, leading jihadists to capture several villages and towns in the region, eventually entering the city of Aleppo by Friday. Aleppo, Syria's second-largest city, had remained under government control since 2016.

In response, the Syrian Armed Forces, supported by Russian fighter jets stationed in the region, initiated a counteroffensive on Thursday, engaging in intense clashes to reclaim lost territory. A military source informed Sana on Sunday that government forces managed to prevent militants from advancing towards the city of Hama in central Syria. They successfully liberated multiple towns and villages in Hama province, such as Suran, Halfaya, Qalat al-Madiq, and Maardas, according to the source.

Syrian media outlets reported that nearly 1,000 terrorists have been killed amid the fighting over the past three days.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Syrian General Command acknowledged that the army had suffered losses, but highlighted that HTS fighters had been unable to establish permanent positions due to aerial bombardments by Syrian and Russian jets. The statement also noted that the militants’ assault had been “supported by thousands of foreign terrorists, heavy weapons, and a large number of drones.”

Damascus has consistently accused Western nations and their regional allies of supporting terrorist groups active in the area. A report published by the Kyiv Post on Sunday claimed that some Islamist factions involved in the attacks on Syria last week had been trained by the Khimik Group, a special forces unit of the Ukrainian military intelligence service. The report suggested that this unit, reportedly operating in Syria for some time, trained terrorists in tactics developed during the ongoing conflict with Russia, including drone usage.
