Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure in the Democratic Party's progressive faction, has recently come under scrutiny after she seemingly removed her pronouns from her X account bio. At 35, she had previously apologized to her followers for not including her pronouns on social media, stating two years ago that the descriptors “fell off” without her noticing.
However, since Donald Trump's election victory last week, observers have pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez no longer lists her ‘she/her’ pronouns on her X bio. Additionally, she has changed her title from the gender-neutral ‘Representative’ to ‘Congresswoman.’
Journalist Benjamin Ryan noted that Ocasio-Cortez appears to have made these changes on social media between August 3, 2023, and late May of this year.
In response, conservative commentators have accused the progressive lawmaker of hypocrisy and of feigning support for progressive gender inclusivity.
Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a notable critic of Ocasio-Cortez, has called for an explanation regarding her decision, emphasizing that Ocasio-Cortez has been "shoving gender lies and insane ideology down people’s throats for years.”
Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer known for her opposition to the inclusion of trans athletes in women’s sports, also criticized Ocasio-Cortez on social media, arguing that politicians like her will “pretend they never embraced the insanity.” Gaines expressed that Ocasio-Cortez has been particularly notable in debates regarding these issues.
“We’re winning and it’s glorious,” Gaines stated, as many Trump supporters interpret the Republican candidate’s election victory as indicative of a shift away from "woke" agendas.
Additionally, conservative commentator Paul Szypula suggested that Ocasio-Cortez’s removal of her pronouns is connected to a “massive exodus from the Democrat Party by Hispanic voters,” who he claims often hold “conservative values and aren’t thrilled with gender ideology.”
As the backlash continues, Ocasio-Cortez, re-elected last week for her fourth term in Congress, has not yet publicly addressed the controversy.
