Another US Publication Reconsiders Endorsing Candidates in Elections
USA Today announced that it will refrain from endorsing either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump in the upcoming presidential election. Read Full Article at RT.com.
Instead of issuing endorsements, the publication plans to concentrate on delivering “readers with the facts that matter and the trusted information they need to make informed decisions,” according to a spokesman who spoke to the Daily Beast on Monday.
USA Today, which boasts approximately 130,000 print subscribers and millions more online, previously endorsed Biden over then-President Donald Trump, asserting that the Democrat provided “a shaken nation a harbor of calm and competence” and was “well positioned to repair the wreckage” that Trump left behind during his administration.
This year, by abstaining from endorsements, USA Today joins the Washington Post and the LA Times in a similar decision. The Post, known for its endorsement history spanning nearly 40 years and its memorable slogan ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’ that emerged after Trump's 2016 election, explained that their choice reflects a desire to “return to our roots.”
Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of the Washington Post, characterized the decision as “principled,” stating that “presidential endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election” and instead “create a perception of bias.”
In the case of the LA Times, owner Patrick Soon-Shiong rejected a proposal from the editorial board to endorse Democratic candidate Harris, believing that choosing not to recommend a candidate would lead to less division in a turbulent election year. This decision resulted in the resignation of three editorial board members.
In contrast, the New York Times, which endorsed Biden in 2020 and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, has opted to maintain its position. In September, its editorial board backed Harris, describing her as “the only patriotic choice for president,” while declaring that Trump “is not fit to be president.”
