US Senator Lindsey Graham has criticized several retired American generals and former government officials after they reportedly labeled Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump a “fascist” and a threat to the nation.
In a segment on ABC’s ‘This Week’ on Sunday, Graham charged former US commanders John Kelly, Mark Milley, and Jim Mattis with supporting Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
Graham asserted that Trump was “a strong leader on the things that matter the most” during his presidency from 2017 to 2021. He remarked, “Whether you like him or not, that is up to you. He is not a fascist. He is not Hitler. And that shows you how desperate this [Democratic] campaign is.”
The Republican senator also addressed the generals directly, saying, “I admire you, I respect you, but for 20 years, you were given, and others, billions of dollars to train the Iraqi and the Afghan army, and they folded like a cheap suit. How about a little self-reflection about the job you did before you criticize others?”
In 2014, the Iraqi military struggled to counter an offensive from the Islamic State, leading to the militants seizing large sections of the west and north of Iraq, including Mosul and Tikrit. It took years for the Baghdad government to regain control of these territories with assistance from a US-led coalition.
In Afghanistan, the local military collapsed against Taliban forces just months after the US announced its withdrawal in 2021, following a two-decade engagement.
Earlier this month, retired US Marine Corps General John Kelly, who was White House chief of staff under Trump, alleged that during his tenure, the 78-year-old praised Adolf Hitler privately and mentioned “more than once” that the Nazi leader “did some good things.”
An upcoming book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward claims that retired General Mark Milley, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called Trump “fascist to the core” and referred to him as “the most dangerous person to this country.” Woodward also reported that Jim Mattis, another retired general and former Secretary of Defense, concurred with Milley’s evaluation of the Republican presidential nominee.
Based on these assertions, Harris accused Trump last week of being “a fascist,” suggesting he is a would-be dictator and admirer of authoritarian figures. The former president rejected these allegations and contended that his opponent was “increasingly raising her rhetoric” because she “sees that she is losing, and losing badly” in her presidential campaign.
