ABC News agrees to defamation settlement with Trump
The network has agreed to transfer $15 million to the future museum of the US president-elect.

ABC News has committed to donating $15 million to the forthcoming museum of US President-elect Donald Trump in a settlement related to a defamation lawsuit. Trump filed the lawsuit after anchor George Stephanopoulos asserted live on air that the real estate mogul-turned-politician was found liable for raping advice columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Details from the settlement document released on Saturday reveal that ABC will contribute $10 million to “a presidential foundation and museum” established by Trump, along with an additional $1 million to his legal team.

Alongside the financial settlement, ABC issued an editor’s note on its website, expressing that the network and Stephanopoulos “regret statements regarding President J. Trump.”

“We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing,” ABC stated briefly.

The legal conflict arose from an episode of ABC News’ ‘This Week’ that aired on March 10, 2024. During an interview with Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace, Stephanopoulos claimed that “Donald Trump has been found liable for rape by a jury.”

In May 2023, a Manhattan jury ruled Trump civilly liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll, awarding her $5 million in damages. In a subsequent trial in January 2024, a jury determined that Trump must pay Carroll an additional $83.3 million in damages. The presiding judge, Lewis Kaplan, noted that the verdicts did not demonstrate that Trump raped her “within the narrow, technical meaning of a particular section of the New York Penal Law,” as reported by the Associated Press.

In August 2023, a judge dismissed Trump’s countersuit against Carroll for defamation.

Carroll alleges that Trump assaulted her in a New York department store during the mid-1990s. Trump has denied any misconduct, labeling the allegations as “a hoax and a lie.” He has asserted that Carroll’s lawsuits form part of a broader politically motivated campaign to undermine his 2024 presidential bid. The president-elect has also frequently accused “the lying media” of contributing to the proliferation of false narratives about him.
