Italy's Andy Diaz Hernandez achieved a new world-leading mark to win gold in the men's triple jump on the first day of the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing on Friday.

Hernandez recorded 17.80m with his first jump, and although he fouled on his second attempt, he didn't need to compete again since no other athlete threatened his lead. This jump marked a personal best for the Cuban-born athlete by 5cm, placing him 23rd on the all-time list.

Home favourite Zhu Yaming secured the silver medal with a third jump of 17.33m, while Burkina Faso's Hugues Fabrice Zango, the defending world indoor champion and 2023 outdoor world champion, clinched bronze with a last-effort jump of 17.15m.

In the men's 60m race, Great Britain's Jeremiah Azu captured the title, edging out Lachlan Kennedy by a hundredth of a second. Kennedy, the world leader this year, finished closely behind, while South Africa's Akani Simbine took bronze with a time of 6.54. Chinese veteran Xie Zhenye narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in 6.58.

Canadian shot putter Sarah Mitton celebrated her second consecutive world indoor title by fending off a competitive field that included two-time outdoor world champion Chase Jackson, Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Gong Lijiao, and 2022 world indoor champion Auriol Dongmo.

Maintaining the lead with a throw of 20.36m going into her final attempt, the 28-year-old added 12cm to secure gold with a distance of 20.48m, well ahead of silver medallist Jessica Schilder from the Netherlands, who achieved 20.07m. Jackson claimed bronze just a centimetre behind, while Gong finished fifth and Dongmo eighth.

The day’s other gold medal was awarded to Finnish multi-eventer Saga Vanninen, who dominated the women's pentathlon with a score of 4821 points, finishing ahead of Ireland’s Kate O'Connor, with Taliyah Brooks of the USA taking bronze.
