Xi Jinping Calls for Actions to Achieve 2024 Economic Goals
Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has urged efforts to achieve the economic and social development targets for 2024.
On July 26, the CPC Central Committee convened a symposium with individuals outside the CPC to gather feedback on the nation's current economic landscape and plans for the latter half of the year. Xi oversaw the symposium and delivered a keynote address.
Xi emphasized maintaining the overarching principle of pursuing progress while ensuring stability for the latter part of the year's economic initiatives.
China aims for an annual GDP growth of approximately 5 percent for 2024, having already achieved a 5 percent year-on-year increase in GDP in the first half of 2024.
Xi underscored the importance of fully implementing the new development philosophy, accelerating the formation of a new development pattern, fostering new quality productive forces tailored to local conditions, and advancing high-quality development.
He highlighted the need for deepening reforms, enhancing macro regulation, invigorating market entities, stabilizing market expectations, sustaining positive economic recovery momentum, and improving people's livelihoods.
The symposium was attended by Standing Committee members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, including Li Qiang, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, and Ding Xuexiang. Li provided an overview of the first half's economic activities and shared insights on plans for the second half.
Leaders from eight non-CPC parties, the head of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and a representative of unaffiliated individuals offered suggestions on issues such as comprehensive reform, high-level opening-up, strengthening the industrial and technological foundations for new quality productive forces, and enhancing confidence in the private sector.
Xi acknowledged the continued recovery of the Chinese economy in the first half of the year, noting progress in high-quality development.
Despite some difficulties and problems, Xi stated these challenges emerged during development and transformation and can be addressed.
He emphasized the importance of confidence, strategic resolve, and proactive measures to tackle issues and challenges.
Xi appealed to non-CPC parties and individuals to adopt a correct perspective on the challenges faced during reform and development and to collaborate to overcome various risks and obstacles.
Additionally, he called for research on major reform measures proposed at the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, on key social and economic development issues, and on preparations for the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), to guide the CPC Central Committee's informed decision-making.
