Where do GOP candidates stand on the issues? See for yourself.

The second debate is here and it's clear where the Republican presidential hopefuls stand on the big issues. With a long year ahead, it's still too early to know which issues will matter most at the ballot box, but GOP candidates aren't waiting around to deliver their pitches. Watch the below videos to hear each candidate's carefully crafted messages.

Abortion

Following the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade last June, GOP hopefuls are divided over the role of the federal government with respect to abortion policy. The party initially touted Roe’s downfall as a major win but is now grappling with the fact that further restrictions on abortion are largely unpopular. 2024 candidates vary widely, with some suggesting 15-week national bans. Amid this national reckoning, others clearly struggle to put on record what exactly their abortion policy is. Watch this video to see how candidates wrestle with the issue.

Trans Issues

Transgender rights have become a flashpoint in Republican politics and the 2024 election. As states vote over issues such as gender-affirming care, education and participation in sports, GOP hopefuls are hitting the trail with their talking points. Watching the candidates campaign, a faultline over the role of parents in their child’s care starts to form. Some support bans on gender affirming care for minors while others stress the role of parental guidance on these issues. Watch to see how the issue has taken a front-row seat on the 2024 trail.

Ukraine

Over a year and a half into Ukraine’s battle against a Russian invasion, the role of U.S. aid is critical. Some GOP hopefuls maintain the importance of this assistance — and argue for more of it, too. Others, however, say it’s time to pull back. This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleads with world leaders for more assistance amid the country’s latest counteroffensive. Watch this video to see how 2024 hopefuls try to distinguish themselves from their competitors.

Education

Issues from parental rights to school choice, book bans and the role of teachers unions are popping up all over the 2024 campaign trail as school boards and state legislatures grapple with national involvement as well. The candidates seem to rally around issues like school choice, yet only certain politicians repeatedly hit on the place of “woke ideology” in the classroom. Watch this video to see what the 2024 hopefuls care about most in education.

Economy

Inflation remains high as we head into the 2024 election cycle, and Republican presidential candidates are leaning into attacks on Biden’s economic record, which the president’s supporters have coined as “Bidenomics.” From vowing to increase oil production to cutting taxes, the candidates blame the president’s policies for lingering inflation and vow to cut spending — though they differ on how and where to make those cuts. Watch the video to see how each candidate would tackle the problem as president.

Guns

As worry over gun violence rises, Republican candidates remain steadfast on protecting the right to bear arms. Their answers to issues like mass shootings center on fortifying schools, tough on crime policy and mental health interventions, though they are scant on details. Watch the video to see how the candidates plan to handle the gun debate as president.

China

Republican presidential candidates agree: China is the number one threat to the United States. But how do they plan to address it? Candidates differ on how to balance the need to project strength while protecting U.S. economic interests. From concerns over military dominance, threats to Taiwan and the need for economic independence, watch how the candidates aim to confront China.
