Footage shared by Ghebreyesus captures the frantic moment he was hurriedly guided away from the airport lounge, alongside a visual of a strike hitting a control tower.
“It was very chaotic. People were in disarray and running everywhere and no shelter: we were completely exposed,” Ghebreyesus recounted to reporters upon his return to Switzerland on Saturday, according to AFP. He added, “It’s a matter of luck. Otherwise, if the missile deviated just slightly, it could have been on our heads... my colleague actually said after all that, we escaped death narrowly.”
In a message on X, he expressed gratitude for the support he received during the ordeal. “I’m especially grateful to the colleagues and airport staff, who were selfless as they tried to protect me,” he noted.
Julien Harneis, the UN's Yemen coordinator, reported that a UN worker sustained injuries from shrapnel, stating, “I saw his blood on the tarmac this morning as we said goodbye to Tedros.”
The Israel Defense Forces carried out these airstrikes in retaliation for missile attacks from the Houthis targeting Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities. The IDF claimed that the Houthis were exploiting the country’s airports and seaports to facilitate arms smuggling operations from Iran.
