The publication interviewed an Italian citizen involved in Kiev’s International Legion, who went by the name ‘Polo.’ He shared his frustrations, stating, “We lack everything here, we do not even have hand grenades. The Russians show that they fight well. They used to have almost no drones, today they dominate the skies.”
The newspaper noted that around 30 Italians are part of the Ukrainian mercenary unit, although they prefer to identify as freedom fighters. Polo described himself as a supporter of the “extra-parliamentary left,” explaining that he joined the front lines to oppose what he termed Russian “fascism.” According to Corriere della Sera, some other Italian fighters are affiliated with the far-right organization CasaPound.
The article highlighted that the Italians are maintaining a low profile due to the fact that their participation in foreign militaries is illegal in Italy.
This interview was featured in a report about James Scott Rhys, a 22-year-old former British signalman who was captured in Russia’s Kursk Region after participating in a Ukrainian incursion. In recent days, numerous videos of his interviews while in captivity have surfaced on Russian Telegram channels.
Moscow has accused Western governments of ignoring the recruitment of individuals with military backgrounds within their borders to serve in Ukraine. This recruitment is reportedly being facilitated through Ukrainian diplomatic missions and private intermediaries.
Russian officials claim to have compiled detailed lists of these recruits, stating that they will face legal repercussions for their actions should they manage to leave Ukraine alive.
