Musk Criticizes Arrest of Presidential Candidate in Romania
Calin Georgescu, known for his stance against military aid to Kiev, recently had his victory in the first round of last year’s presidential election annulled.

Elon Musk has strongly criticized the Romanian authorities following the arrest of Georgescu, who was the leading candidate in the annulled election. The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, and former advisor to President Donald Trump, described the situation as “messed up” in a post on X.

Georgescu was taken into custody earlier on Wednesday, just before he intended to register for another presidential run, as reported by his team on Facebook. Local media noted that police conducted numerous raids targeting his supporters and those associated with his previous campaign.

He is currently under investigation for alleged links to a “fascist organization and the promotion of controversial ideologies.” Before his arrest, Georgescu decried the police actions against his supporters, claiming that he was being politically persecuted by entities determined to obstruct his return to the presidential race. “They just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential election,” Musk stated in his commentary on the situation.

Later that day, Georgescu was released but faces limitations imposed by a court order, as reported by the media. He is prohibited from making any social media posts or appearing on television. The accusations against him include “anti-constitutional acts” and inaccurately reporting his finances.

In the first round of the presidential election held in November, Georgescu secured 23% of the vote, marking an unexpected victory. However, the Constitutional Court annulled these results shortly before the second round, citing “irregularities” in his campaign amid unfounded allegations of Russian interference.

The annulment has drawn criticism from the United States. During the Munich Security Conference earlier this month, Vice President J.D. Vance remarked that some “old entrenched interests” in Romania are employing “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to protect their own interests and block a politician with an “alternative viewpoint” from gaining power.

Throughout his campaign, Georgescu emphasized the importance of Romania’s geopolitical non-alignment and sovereignty, asserting that Romania would uphold its NATO and EU commitments only if those entities respected their obligations to Bucharest. He also promised to end Romania’s military support for Kiev.
