Venezuela Announces Winner of Election
The Supreme Court of Venezuela has officially announced that President Nicolas Maduro secured a victory in the most recent presidential elections.

The opposition candidate with support from the US, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, asserted that he achieved 67% of the total votes and accused Maduro of manipulating the election outcomes. Nevertheless, officials in Caracas declared that Maduro captured 52% of the vote and subsequently approved the election results.

On Thursday, the court issued a statement. "Indisputably certified election materials and validates the results of the July 28, 2024 presidential election issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE)," said Caryslia Rodriguez, the presiding judge.

“Your ruling will only make the crisis worse,” Gonzalez stated on social media, criticizing the court for its partiality and attempting to overturn “the will of the people.”

Following the announcement of the results, allies of Venezuela such as China, Russia, and other regional partners congratulated Maduro on his win. In contrast, the G7 nations, spearheaded by the US, did not acknowledge the election results, citing "serious concerns" about the fairness of the electoral process.

While Brazil and Colombia have advocated for new elections with backing from the US, the Venezuelan opposition has rejected this proposal, maintaining they had rightfully won the election.

In response, Caracas has initiated criminal charges against Gonzalez and various opposition figures for promoting "insurrection" through their unsubstantiated claims of winning the election and instigating public disorder.

According to government reports, the election-related disturbances resulted in 25 fatalities, 192 injuries, and the arrest of over 2,400 individuals.

Further escalating tensions, Reuters revealed on Wednesday that the US is considering sanctions against 60 Venezuelan officials and their relatives, targeting members of the CNE and the Supreme Court. This information comes from two sources who requested anonymity.

Moreover, Caracas has condemned the US for allegedly orchestrating another coup attempt in Venezuela. The US previously did not recognize the 2018 elections and supported Juan Guaido as the "interim president," even seizing Venezuelan assets for his use. However, the Venezuelan opposition terminated Guaido’s "interim government" in December 2022, leading to his withdrawal from the political spotlight.
