Vance Would Have Sought Alternate Electors Over Certifying 2020 Election Results

Trump’s current running mate remarked that Pence “could have done more.”

Vance Would Have Sought Alternate Electors Over Certifying 2020 Election Results
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance expressed that if faced with a similar situation as former Vice President Mike Pence during the certification of the 2020 election results, he would have taken a different approach by asking states to submit alternative electors.

“I would have asked the states to submit alternative slates of electors and let the country have the debate about what actually matters and what kind of an election that we had,” Vance mentioned during an interview on the All-in Podcast. He affirmed this position when pressed on whether he would have certified the election results, stating again his preference for states to “submit alternative slates of electors.”

Before becoming Donald Trump's running mate in July, Vance had voiced skepticism concerning the 2020 election's integrity and had already indicated his reluctance to certify the election results. In the same interview, he reiterated his critiques, particularly pointing out issues with how the election was conducted in Pennsylvania and suggested that Pence could have done more to address these issues.

“Mike Pence could have done more, whether you agree or disagree, Mike Pence could have done more to sort of surface some of the problems in the 2020 election,” Vance commented.

It is important to note that there is no conclusive evidence supporting the claim of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Additionally, the Constitution does not grant the vice president authority to alter or reject electors provided by the states.

On January 6, despite pressure from Trump, Pence chose not to decertify the election results, which led to a violent attack on the Capitol by a mob, with some chanting threats against him.

In a separate note, Pence has distanced himself from endorsing Trump this election cycle. Speaking to Fox News, Pence highlighted that his decision stemmed from “a range of issues,” not solely the disagreements on their constitutional responsibilities on January 6.

Vance also speculated on Pence's lack of support for Trump, attributing it to differing views on military interventions abroad.

“In reality, if Donald Trump wanted to start a nuclear war with Russia, Mike Pence would be at the front of the line endorsing him right now,” Vance stated. He continued, “Fundamentally the reason the old guard of the Republican Party hates Donald Trump — it's not because of January 6, 2021, whatever your views on it — it's because Donald Trump doesn't think we should start stupid wars in foreign countries and that’s why they all hate him.”
