The US government has discontinued a widely used app aimed at assisting migrants in their attempts to cross the southern border. The CBP One app was terminated shortly after Trump took office as the 47th president on Monday.
In his inaugural address, Trump reiterated his campaign commitment to combat illegal migration and protect Americans from “an invasion.” Later that evening, he signed an executive order that declared a national emergency at the southern border with Mexico.
After Trump's inauguration, US Customs and Border Protection announced that the app would be stopped immediately. The CBP One app, launched during former President Joe Biden's administration, enabled migrants to book appointments at eight southwestern border ports of entry and apply for passage through a lottery system. A notice on the CBP website indicated that the app is no longer operational, and all existing appointments have been canceled.
Reports estimate that around 270,000 migrants were waiting for CBP One appointments on the Mexican side of the border, according to CBS News.
During his campaign, Trump committed to executing mass deportations and reinstating the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy he established during his previous term.
“All illegal entry will immediately be halted. And we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” Trump stated during his inauguration speech. He also vowed to combat drug cartels and other foreign criminal gangs, particularly those based in Mexico.
Trump has frequently criticized his predecessor and the Democrats for their inability to secure the border and manage the rising number of illegal migrants. The Office of Homeland Security Statistics 2024 report indicated that approximately 11 million undocumented migrants were residing in the United States as of 2022.
