US-supported and Turkish-supported troops agree to ceasefire in Syria, says commander
The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) has consented to withdraw from Manbij following an agreement mediated by the United States.

In an announcement regarding the situation, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi stated that the US-backed SDF and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) have established a ceasefire after several days of conflict over control of the northern city of Manbij.

“We have reached a ceasefire agreement in Manbij with US mediation, in order to preserve the security and safety of civilians,” Abdi wrote on X early Wednesday morning. He further indicated that local SDF fighters “will be withdrawn from the area as soon as possible.”

Abdi also mentioned, “Our goal is a ceasefire across Syria and to enter into a political process for the future of the country.”

Previously, the SDF reported that the SNA had been attacking Manbij, located to the northeast of Aleppo, since November 27, and was making progress towards Kobani, a key Kurdish stronghold near the Turkish border. This military action coincided with a broader offensive by Syrian opposition groups, which recently saw the capture of Damascus and the removal of President Bashar Assad from power.

As reported by Turkish media, the SNA has been conducting operations against Kurdish militias affiliated with the SDF, which are deemed terrorist organizations by Türkiye.

Since 2011, Syria has remained fractured, as the initial uprising against Assad evolved into a comprehensive civil war.

The fragile balance established by a 2020 truce experienced a significant shift earlier this month, as the Islamist-dominated opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham initiated a swift offensive, capturing several major cities, including Damascus and Aleppo. Meanwhile, the SDF launched its own offensive in the eastern region of Syria, seeking to take advantage of the Syrian government army's disintegration.
