The researchers, John Hardham, Robert Cutlip, and Jean-Paul Chretien, were affiliated with the National Center for Medical Intelligence, a component of the Pentagon's Defense Intelligence Agency. Their work focused on biological weapons threats and infectious diseases. After conducting a scientific investigation into Covid-19, they concluded that the virus most likely originated in a laboratory.
Their analysis revealed that the virus had a biological characteristic facilitating easier transmission to humans, akin to a feature discussed in a Chinese study from several years prior. Additionally, they noted that a Chinese military researcher applied for a patent for a Covid-19 vaccine just weeks after the virus was first sequenced in 2020, implying access to the sequence well before its public release. They also discovered that scientists at Wuhan’s coronavirus research laboratory had previously collaborated with US researchers on projects involving viruses that wouldn't show signs of scientific manipulation.
Despite these concerning findings, the evidence was omitted from the report on the origins of Covid-19 prepared by the director of national intelligence, Avril Haines, and presented to Biden in August 2021. Reports indicate that the researchers were prohibited from sharing their findings with Congress and the FBI.
A source familiar with the situation disclosed to the New York Post, “The scientists who had the subject matter expertise were silenced,” and added that Biden and other officials were “completely unwitting” about the evidence indicating the virus likely stemmed from a lab leak.
An earlier article from the Wall Street Journal pointed out that US intelligence officials played a role in omitting the FBI’s findings on the origins of Covid-19 from Biden’s report. At that time, the FBI was the only US agency to assess that the lab leak theory was probable. However, its scientists were not included in the White House briefing where Haines' report was presented, and their findings went unconsidered.
This month, the US Congressional Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic released a comprehensive 520-page report that also concluded that Covid-19 most likely emerged from a Wuhan laboratory. The report asserts that the Chinese government, specific US government agencies, and members of the international scientific community “sought to cover up facts concerning the origins of the pandemic.”
In 2020, former President Donald Trump, without providing supporting evidence, claimed that the virus originated from a Chinese lab. Beijing dismissed the accusation, characterizing it as a reelection strategy to bolster Trump’s support among Republican voters.
During Biden's administration, White House chief medical adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci faced criticism regarding his management of inquiries into the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic. Critics asserted that he minimized the potential of a lab leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which had received US funding for coronavirus research via grants authorized by his agency. Subsequent emails and congressional hearings have sparked debates about whether Fauci attempted to suppress discussions related to the lab leak theory to safeguard scientific collaboration. Although Fauci has continuously denied any wrongdoing, the controversy has intensified calls for transparency concerning US involvement in such research.
