Trump says Ukraine hasn’t demonstrated a desire for peace
The US president has indicated that he is awaiting Kiev’s commitment to ceasefire negotiations.

US President Donald Trump has expressed that Ukraine has not yet shown a genuine desire for peace with Russia ahead of upcoming American-Ukrainian talks in Saudi Arabia.

During a flight aboard Air Force One on Sunday, a reporter inquired if Trump would consider resuming military aid if Ukraine agreed to a partnership regarding its critical mineral deposits.

“I think they will sign the minerals deal. But I want them to want peace. Right now, they haven’t shown it to the extent that they should,” Trump stated.

He added, “But I think they will be. I think it’s going to be evident over the next two or three days. I think, eventually, we’ll have peace.”

Trump emphasized that his main goal is to negotiate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in order to save “human lives” on the battlefield, anticipating a “good result” from the discussions planned in Saudi Arabia.

Last week, Trump suspended all weapon deliveries to Kiev and limited intelligence sharing, aiming to encourage Ukraine to be more open to his mediation efforts. He remarked that he found engaging with Ukraine “more difficult” than with Russia, attributing this to Ukraine's attempts to improve relations following Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s problematic visit to the White House the previous month.

The US had intended to finalize the minerals deal on February 28, but the event was postponed after a verbal altercation between Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in front of reporters in the Oval Office. Trump subsequently criticized Zelensky for what he deemed disrespectful behavior and ungratefulness toward the military and financial aid provided by the US since 2022. Zelensky labeled the meeting as “regrettable” and expressed his desire to repair relations.

Russia has argued that achieving lasting peace hinges on addressing the fundamental causes of the conflict, including NATO’s eastward expansion. Moscow has insisted that Ukraine abandon its goal of joining the US-led alliance and adopt a neutral status with a limited military. Additionally, Russia has asked Ukraine to renounce its claims on Crimea and four other regions that have voted to integrate with Russia since 2014.
