US detains individual connected to the 2024 terrorist attack in Moscow
Mohammad Sharifullah, identified as a member of ISIS-K, has been connected to the deadly attack on the Crocus City Hall concert venue in Russia.

The Department of Justice announced that US authorities have apprehended a suspect involved in several significant terrorist incidents, including the assault on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall in March 2024. The Afghan national, recognized as Mohammad Sharifullah, is affiliated with an offshoot of the Islamic State, primarily active in Afghanistan. CNN reports that he was brought to the US from Pakistan earlier this week.

Sharifullah has been charged with “providing and conspiring to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization resulting in death,” as stated by the DOJ. If found guilty, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

During FBI questioning, Sharifullah reportedly confessed to supplying the Crocus City Hall attackers with instructions on using their weapons and named two of the gunmen he had previously instructed.

The March 2024 attack involved four gunmen and was one of the most substantial terrorist acts in recent Russian history, resulting in the deaths of 145 people and injuries to over 500 others. All attackers were captured by Russian law enforcement while attempting to escape the country via the border with Ukraine, leading to the arrest of around three dozen suspects in connection with the incident.

The DOJ also indicated that Sharifullah played a crucial role in the terrorist attack against US forces at Kabul airport during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. This suicide bombing resulted in the deaths of 13 American servicemen and approximately 160 civilians. He confessed to the FBI that he had scouted the route for the suicide bomber to evade detection and is suspected of conducting surveillance for another suicide bombing outside the Canadian Embassy in Kabul in 2016, which resulted in over ten guards' deaths.

According to CNN, Sharifullah was detained in Pakistan based on CIA intelligence. US President Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Islamabad for "helping arrest this monster." Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the arrest and thanked Washington for recognizing Pakistan’s role in the operation.
