US bombers strike sites in Yemen
B-2 aircraft have targeted Houthi weapons storage facilities, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has announced.

The United States has utilized long-range bombers to hit five locations in Yemen under the control of the Houthi militant group, Austin stated in a Wednesday announcement.

Since last November, the Houthis have been attacking commercial ships navigating the Red Sea, specifically targeting vessels they believe are linked to Israel. These actions aim to pressure the Israeli government to cease its military operations in the Gaza Strip. In retaliation, US forces initiated Operation Prosperity Guardian against the Houthis in December.

According to Austin, the most recent bombing operation involved B-2 Spirit long-range bombers, focusing on five underground weapons storage facilities. He emphasized that this operation is a “unique demonstration of the United States’ ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried underground, hardened, or fortified.”

Austin further noted, “The Houthis’ illegal attacks continue to disrupt the free flow of international commerce, threaten environmental catastrophe, and put innocent civilian lives and US and partner forces’ lives at risk.”

Yemeni media outlets reported that US strikes occurred near the capital, Sanaa, and in the vicinity of the Houthi stronghold of Saada.

The Biden administration has pledged to continue military support for Israel despite growing concerns from American officials regarding the increasing civilian casualties and the interruptions to humanitarian aid in Gaza due to the actions of the Israel Defense Forces.

In an unusual display of discontent, Washington recently threatened to suspend future arms deliveries to Israel if it does not “demonstrate a sustained commitment” to improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza, as reflected in a joint letter from Austin and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to their Israeli counterparts.

Previously, the State Department faced accusations of misleading Congress when it certified in May that Israel was adhering to US law, which prohibits military assistance to countries that impede the provision of American humanitarian aid.

In addition to targeting commercial vessels, the Houthis have also attacked Western warships in the region and claimed responsibility for missile launches aimed directly at Israel, framing these actions as a show of solidarity with the Palestinians.
