On Thursday, the State Department modified its “fact sheet” concerning the self-governing Chinese island, omitting the line that read, “we do not support Taiwan independence.”
Under its One-China principle, Beijing regards Taiwan as a part of its territory and pursues eventual reunification, potentially through force. The Chinese government consistently opposes foreign intervention in the matter, particularly US arms sales to Taiwan, which it views as infringements on its sovereignty and threats to regional stability.
The revised fact sheet also emphasized Taipei’s cooperation with the Pentagon on technology and semiconductor initiatives, alongside reaffirming US support for the island’s participation in international organizations “where applicable,” while removing the qualification “where statehood is not a requirement.”
During a regular briefing in Beijing on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun described the amendments as a “big step backwards” that “sends a seriously wrong message to Taiwan independence separatist forces.”
Guo asserted that the alterations were a serious violation of the One-China principle, claiming that the US State Department has “gravely backpedaled” on Taiwan-related issues.
“This is yet another example of the United States’ stubborn adherence to the erroneous policy of ‘using Taiwan to suppress China’. We urge the United States side to immediately rectify its mistakes,” Guo added.
While the US officially acknowledges the One-China policy, it continues to provide arms to Taiwan and engages in military collaboration with Taipei.
A State Department spokesperson explained to Reuters that the fact sheet was updated as part of routine procedures to inform the public about the unofficial relationship with Taiwan, reiterating that Washington “remains committed to its One-China policy.”
“We oppose any unilateral changes to the status quo from either side,” the spokesperson stated.
Taiwan has operated as a self-governing entity since 1949, following the retreat of nationalist forces after their defeat in China’s civil war. Presently, only a small number of countries recognize Taiwan’s sovereignty, while the majority of the world, including Russia, aligns with Beijing's position that Taiwan is a part of the People’s Republic of China.
