The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon suggests that the recent Israeli strikes on its positions may have been "deliberate," Tenenti stated in an interview with RTN on Friday. Over the past two days, the mission has been hit by four attacks resulting in injuries to four personnel, he confirmed.
At least three of these attacks were confirmed to be initiated by Israel, with Tenenti indicating that the Israeli Defense Force specifically targeted the mission's communication systems, surveillance cameras, and a watchtower located within its headquarters in southern Lebanon.
One notable incident involved a Merkava tank firing at a watchtower in the border town of Naqoura, which left two Indonesian peacekeepers injured. This action has provoked international condemnation from countries such as Indonesia, Russia, Italy, France, Spain, Ireland, Türkiye, and Canada. The United States expressed that it was "deeply concerned" about the reports surrounding the incident.
When asked by RT whether UNIFIL views the attacks as accidental or intentional, Tenenti suggested that the mission leans towards the latter. He stated, “Yesterday, three attacks were very much considered… deliberate attacks,” describing the situation as "very concerning."
According to Tenenti, prior to the attacks, the Israeli military had requested that peacekeepers vacate certain positions in southern Lebanon. He noted, “We decided to stay because it is important for the UN flag to fly in the area, where we have been mandated by the UN Security Council.”
Additionally, Tenenti mentioned another attack against the mission on Friday, stating, “We can still not attribute responsibility as we’re looking into it,” while reporting that this assault resulted in two more peacekeepers being injured, one of whom sustained serious wounds.
The official expressed alarm over the "tragic developments" related to the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah over the past months, remarking, “Thousands of people have been killed. In the last months, more people have been killed than in the conflict in 2006,” alluding to the 34-day armed conflict known as the July War or the Second Lebanon War.
Israel has confirmed that its troops fired near a UNIFIL base after instructing UN forces in the area to take cover, claiming that Hezbollah fighters were operating from within or near civilian areas and the positions of UNIFIL.
