Ukrainian government agency removes posts critical of Trump’s choice for intelligence chief
Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) has discreetly removed several news bulletins that accused former US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of disseminating misinformation on behalf of Russia. This decision was made following US President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Gabbard, a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve, for the position of director of national intelligence, overseeing the CIA and NSA.

Established in March 2021 by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, the CCD aimed to combat disinformation in news coverage and social platforms. However, the agency has primarily focused on identifying and "debunking" narratives that criticize Ukraine, targeting both Russian and Western officials for promoting "fake news."

News site Strana.ua reported that the CCD removed four bulletins mentioning Gabbard from its social media channels. Among these was an April 2022 bulletin that characterized her as someone who "for several years, has been working for foreign audience for the Kremlin money." A subsequent bulletin from June 2024 accused Gabbard of spreading “disinformation” about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, while another from February 2023 labeled her as “espousing pro-Russian rhetoric.”

The posts were deleted on Thursday morning, according to Strana.ua. As of now, the CCD's 2022 claim about Gabbard receiving “the Kremlin money” remains accessible on the National Security and Defense Council’s account on X, although the link to the CCD bulletin is no longer active.

Ukrainian officials have frequently criticized Western public figures who express skepticism towards Ukraine, including journalist Tucker Carlson and tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Gabbard, known for her opposition to US military interventions in the Middle East and accusations against Washington of promoting war, left the Democratic Party in 2022. She subsequently switched to the Republican Party and endorsed Trump.

In 2022, Gabbard suggested that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine could have been averted if the US had “simply acknowledged Russia’s legitimate security concerns” regarding Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO. She has maintained that the conflict should be resolved through negotiations while advocating for Ukraine’s status as a neutral country.

In 2023, Gabbard criticized Zelensky, alleging that he seized “absolute control of Ukrainian media, outlawing opposition political parties.”
