U.S. officials have started to acknowledge that Ukraine may need to enter negotiations with Russia, which could involve conceding territory it considers its own, the paper indicated, citing anonymous sources. As Trump prepares to return to the White House and Ukrainian forces face increasing losses on the battlefield with Russia reclaiming territory in the Kursk region, Ukraine finds itself in what is viewed as its “weakest position in nearly three years."
Many officials in the White House believe that “within a few months, Ukraine could be pushed into negotiations with Russia” and that it “could be forced to give up territory,” the report noted. This “quiet recognition” regarding potential territorial concessions is also resonating among Ukraine's European supporters, according to the Post.
Biden recently allowed Ukraine to utilize U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory and approved the provision of banned landmines, aiming to equip the country with “the strongest hand possible” ahead of any prospective negotiations with Moscow after Trump takes office.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has dismissed any notion of making territorial concessions to Russia. However, Biden's administration has “largely resigned themselves” to the expectation that Trump “will not provide Ukraine more assistance,” the report added.
Many of Ukraine’s European allies reportedly feel “frustrated” that it took the U.S. so long to deliver the latest capabilities, believing that such support should have been extended when Ukraine's military position was “more robust.” Nevertheless, officials explained that Biden's decisions were “guided by evolving battlefield conditions” and that he has authorized specific weapons only when “the conditions warrant” their use.
Concern has emerged in Washington as Ukraine reallocated troops to Russia’s Kursk region, leading to a quicker loss of territory in the east.
Following the U.S. approval for Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS, Putin responded by announcing the deployment of Russia’s new hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missiles, which are capable of carrying nuclear warheads and were utilized against a Ukrainian military-industrial site in Dnepropetrovsk.
Putin stated that Moscow will respond “decisively and in a mirror-like manner” to any further escalation of aggressive actions from Kiev and its international supporters.
