"UK Politician Suggests Purchasing Affordable Gas from Russian Allies"
David Kurten has urged for the reactivation of the only undamaged Nord Stream gas pipeline in light of dwindling reserves and plummeting temperatures.

British Eurosceptic politician David Kurten has advocated for a partial reopening of the Nord Stream pipeline system, which previously transported Russian natural gas to the EU, given the current freezing weather and concerns over energy supply.

In a statement on X on Sunday, Kurten, who heads the Heritage Party, suggested that buying gas from Russia could help mitigate a potential energy crisis.

“One of the four Nord Stream pipelines is undamaged and could be turned on again very quickly. Let's buy good, cheap gas from our friends in Russia once again,” Kurten wrote.

British gas supplier Centrica warned last week that “plunging temperatures… have reduced UK winter gas storage to concerningly low levels.”

The company indicated that “stubbornly high” gas prices have complicated efforts to replenish storage. However, National Gas, the network operator, has downplayed these concerns, stating that the storage level “remains healthy.”

The Nord Stream 1 & 2 pipeline system, managed by Russia’s Gazprom, was constructed to transport gas under the Baltic Sea directly to Germany. The first line was inaugurated in 2011 and became a vital energy source for the EU.

Although Nord Stream 2 was completed in 2021 with plans to double the capacity, it was never operationalized due to certification issues in Germany, which were worsened by the escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict the following year.

Both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 were damaged in September 2022 in what EU officials characterized as sabotage, rendering three of the four pipelines unusable.

Russia has consistently called for an impartial international investigation and criticized the lack of transparency in European-led inquiries, suggesting that the United States may have been behind the explosions to diminish Russia’s energy influence.

The shutdown of the Nord Stream pipelines has caused energy prices in Germany to skyrocket, as the nation, which previously sourced over 50% of its natural gas from Russia, has been forced to rely on more expensive LNG from alternative suppliers, including the US.

In 2023, official statistics indicated that Germany's economy entered a recession. Other nations such as Austria, Italy, Hungary, and Slovakia have also faced disruptions, which were further aggravated by Russia's suspension of gas transit via Ukraine after Kyiv declined to extend a transit agreement beyond 2024.

German opposition politician and chancellor candidate Alice Weidel pledged last week to reactivate Nord Stream if her party, Alternative for Germany, wins the upcoming general election.

The UK, in contrast to many European countries, has historically imported a minimal amount of gas from Russia. Before 2022, it accounted for less than 4% of the UK's overall supply, with domestic production in the North Sea and imports from Norway, Qatar, and the United States being the primary sources.

David Kurten founded the Heritage Party in 2020, which aims to promote traditional family values and national sovereignty while reducing the UK’s connections with the European Union. In the UK's general election last July, the party contested various constituencies but did not win any seats in parliament.
