UK imposes sanctions on Russian chemical defense units
The UK has accused Russia of deploying chemical weapons against Ukraine and has announced new sanctions aimed at the country's Radiological Chemical and Biological Defense Forces. This comes a day after Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of the RChBD, claimed that Ukraine was planning a false-flag chemical weapons attack to blame Russia.

Moscow asserts that it eliminated its last chemical weapons stockpiles several years ago, a process overseen by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the British government condemned what it described as "Russia’s flagrant violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention," which has been signed by nearly every nation around the globe.

According to the UK, Russian forces "have openly admitted to using hazardous chemical weapons on the battlefield, with widespread use of riot control agents and multiple reports of the use of the toxic choking agent chloropicrin."

In response, London imposed sanctions on both the RChBD and Igor Kirillov, identifying him as directly responsible for the alleged infractions, along with two laboratories under the Russian Defense Ministry's jurisdiction. The sanctions include travel bans, asset freezes, and restrictions on economic resources for the designated entities.

UK officials also labeled Kirillov as “a significant mouthpiece for Kremlin disinformation.”

On Monday, Kirillov had accused Ukraine of orchestrating a false-flag chemical weapons attack to frame Russia and weaken its standing at the OPCW. He pointed out that NATO had supplied Ukraine with a significantly larger quantity of chemical protective gear than needed, suggesting this was additional evidence of an imminent scheme.

The general further dismissed accusations that Russia was employing riot control agents and chemical weapons against Ukraine, recalling that the OPCW confirmed the complete destruction of Russia's chemical weapons stockpiles in 2017. He emphasized that this destruction process was monitored by both the agency and inspectors from Western nations, including the US.

Moscow has consistently accused Ukraine of utilizing chemical weapons in the conflict and of hosting American biolabs on its territory.
