According to CNN, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump is likely to pursue a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict before encouraging talks between Moscow and Kiev, as reported by anonymous sources on Wednesday.
During his campaign, Trump asserted that he could resolve the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if he were reelected. Individuals close to Trump have proposed various ideas, which are currently under review by Mike Waltz, his selection for national security adviser, per CNN.
The discussions remain in the preliminary stages, as two sources familiar with the matter indicated to the network. The report stated that few support Ukrainian membership in NATO.
There exists a substantial divide between the conditions set by Russian and Ukrainian officials for any diplomatic talks.
Andrey Yermak, the influential chief of staff to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, mentioned this week to the Swedish outlet Dagens industri that reverting to the pre-2022 status would serve as “a starting point” for negotiations. This statement seemingly marks a departure from Kiev’s earlier demand for complete control over contested territories, including Crimea, prior to engaging in any discussions.
Before Ukraine's incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region in August, President Vladimir Putin had promised to initiate a ceasefire once Ukraine renounced its NATO aspirations and withdrew troops from former Ukrainian territories that have aligned with Russia.
However, that proposal has since been retracted, and Moscow maintains that no negotiations can commence while Ukrainian forces remain in the Kursk Region. Kiev intends to retain control of the territory it seized for leverage in any potential negotiations.
Several of Trump's allies have shared their views on how to resolve the conflict. Keith Kellogg, chosen by Trump to serve as the special envoy for the Ukraine conflict, advocates for freezing military hostilities and halting Kiev’s NATO membership bid. Richard Grenell, Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and a contender for national security adviser, has suggested the establishment of “autonomous zones” as part of a potential resolution.
In recent months, Russian forces have been making rapid advances along the front lines. Some Ukrainian military officials have expressed concerns that their forces are on the brink of collapse.
