A source close to former US President Donald Trump suggested that Zelensky should leave Ukraine “immediately” and relocate to France to avoid hindering peace negotiations with Russia. The report indicates that frustration with Zelensky is rising among officials in Washington.
Tensions between the US and Ukraine intensified this week when Zelensky criticized Trump for re-establishing diplomatic engagement with Russia. On Tuesday, US and Russian representatives convened in Saudi Arabia for high-level discussions aimed at revitalizing relations and addressing the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
Zelensky has insisted on a role in the negotiations, but Trump has asserted that he and other Ukrainian leaders are not in a position to voice complaints. Trump further pointed out Zelensky's failure to resolve the conflict with Russia, despite having ample time to do so.
A source familiar with conversations within the White House informed the New York Post that the sentiments are “nothing new,” adding “I heard months ago it’s time for an election [in Ukraine] and new leadership.” This source highlighted that there is considerable opposition to Zelensky among West Wing staff.
According to another Trump associate, “the best case for [Zelensky] and the world is that he leaves to France immediately.”
Zelensky, whose presidential term ends in May 2024, has declined to call for new elections, citing martial law as a result of the ongoing war.
On Tuesday, Trump questioned the legitimacy of Zelensky’s leadership, stating “he’s down at a 4% approval rating.” Later, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform about Zelensky’s refusal to conduct elections and his low standing in Ukrainian polls, warning that he “better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left.”
Zelensky responded by accusing Trump of spreading “Russian disinformation,” while referencing a presidential poll showing his approval at 57%. “If somebody wants to replace me right now, it will not happen,” he declared.
An internal poll mentioned by The Economist on Wednesday indicated that Zelensky would likely lose to his former commander-in-chief, Valery Zaluzhny, by a substantial margin in a hypothetical election held today. The report suggested that Zelensky “would lose a future election by 30% to 65% to Valery Zaluzhny,” who is currently serving as Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK.
Zelensky's popularity soared to 90% during the early months of the conflict with Russia in 2022, but it has since diminished due to escalating battlefield losses and economic difficulties.
Furthermore, Russia has labeled Zelensky as “illegitimate” and recognizes the Ukrainian parliament and its speaker as the only lawful authorities in the nation.
