Trump proposes Zelensky contemplate territory cession – El Pais
The president-elect of the United States has conveyed a message this week.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump reached out to Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, urging him to consider a ceasefire and relinquish territories currently occupied by Russia, according to a report by El Pais on Sunday.

Trump has consistently promised to resolve the Ukraine conflict within a day of his inauguration, although he has not provided details on how he intends to accomplish this. His commitments have sparked worries in Kyiv about a potential decrease in aid and an audit of the substantial financial support received from the Biden administration.

“You look at some of these cities and there is not a single building in good condition left. So, when you say ‘restore the country,’ restore what? This is a 110-year reconstruction,” the Spanish newspaper quoted Trump as stating in a “message” to Zelensky from his Florida golf club this week.

Earlier this month, Trump urged both Ukraine and Russia to reach an immediate ceasefire, sharing his call on his social media platform, Truth Social, following discussions in Paris with Zelensky and President Emmanuel Macron.

The Wall Street Journal reported in early December that Trump had mentioned Western Europe should deploy troops to Ukraine to oversee a potential ceasefire. He suggested that the EU should take primary responsibility for defending and aiding Kyiv, with Washington providing support without sending forces.

During a press conference at the end of the year, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated that Moscow is open to negotiating with Kyiv without any preconditions apart from those agreed upon in Istanbul in 2022. These terms included Ukraine’s neutral, non-aligned status and restrictions on the deployment of foreign weaponry. He emphasized that any negotiations would need to acknowledge the current realities on the ground that have emerged since then.
