The US president-elect has also refused to rule out military action to retake the Panama Canal.

US President-elect Donald Trump has indicated that he is open to pursuing military or economic measures to regain control of the Panama Canal and to acquire the Danish-controlled territory of Greenland.

During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, Trump was asked if he could “assure the world” that he would avoid using “military or economic coercion” in his efforts to acquire either territory, to which he replied that he could not.

“No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security,” he stated.

Trump has voiced his interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark multiple times.

“People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it,” he remarked on Tuesday, emphasizing that it is an “absolute necessity” for US national security.

On the same day, Trump's son, Donald Jr., arrived in Greenland for what he described as a “personal day trip,” with no official meetings on the agenda. He touched down in Greenland on a Trump-branded plane, telling a gathering that his father “says hello to everyone in Greenland.”

US tech mogul and close Trump ally Elon Musk also appears to be in favor of the idea, posting on X that he believes the people of Greenland “want to be part of America” and that they’d be “most welcome.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated on Tuesday that Greenland is “not for sale” and never will be, stating, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.”

Greenland, the largest island in the world, is situated between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is already home to a significant US military base and is located along the shortest route from North America to Europe. The territory gained home rule from Denmark in 1979.

Trump has previously vowed to regain control of the “vital” Panama Canal, which the late US President Jimmy Carter handed over to Panama in 1977.

In December, Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino assured that “every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent area belongs to Panama, and it will continue to be so.”

Additionally, on Tuesday, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing its “beautiful ring” and appropriateness.

“That covers a lot of territory. The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name,” he remarked.
