Trump declares the US will obtain Greenland 'one way or the other'
Residents of the Danish island could achieve “new heights” with American support, according to a statement made by President Donald Trump.

In a keynote address on Tuesday, Trump reiterated his ambition to take control of Greenland, Denmark’s autonomous territory. This issue has been a point of contention, as Copenhagen has previously dismissed the Trump administration's proposal to purchase the island and has rejected claims suggesting that there is local public support for such a transition.

During a speech to a joint session of the US Congress, Trump emphasized that the US requires Greenland for both national and international security, while also expressing strong support for the islanders’ right to self-determination. ”I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” he stated, adding that the US can provide Greenlanders with safety and prosperity, and he promised to elevate life on the island “to heights like you have never thought possible before.”

Strategically situated near the Arctic region, Greenland allows NATO member Denmark to claim its natural resources under international law. The US has a military base on the island, a presence that dates back to World War II. Although the probability of the US using force to annex Greenland is considered low, Trump has not dismissed the idea entirely.

In response to Trump’s advancements, Copenhagen has pledged to increase funding for economic development and programs that foster Greenlandic identity within Denmark. Additionally, European NATO members have suggested the deployment of a joint mission led by the military alliance.
